WEAR RARE aims to:

1) To raise awareness of the community about RARE/orphan diseases

2) To raise funds for the families to help with the costs of raising children with orphan diseases

3) To provide the kids and their family one worry-free day

WEAR RARE is an advocacy campaign with three activities: product designing (jeans, bags, etc.) with RARE kids, video campaign for RARE awareness, and finally, a runway to showcase the products that the participants and the kids made together. The main material that will be used for the creation of the products will be denim or jeans (rhymes with “genes”, since these diseases are genetic diseases). To culminate the event, an auction will be held for the products in order to raise the funds for the kids. For more information and detailed description of the activities, we have attached the mechanics of the event.

Mechanics

1. Create a team with the child. The team is composed of the child and 2 to 4 people (open to ALL). Attend the orientation .

2. The team will create products out of used denim. They may make pouches, bags, or use denim jackets and jeans as they are. A design consultant will be assigned to the team to help them conceptualize the creation and design of the products. If the team wants to, they may ask the organizers for the measurements of the child in advance. They may also outsource people who can sew. The team will prepare the general form of the products, but the designing process will be with the child.

3. Meet with the child on September 14, 2013 (Saturday). Get to know the child and design together anything made of denim! Be creative! The products will be auctioned during the main event to help raise funds for the child’s treatment.

3. Make a video and gather likes. The video will contain snippets of the team bonding with the child, a short profile of the child and his or her disease, and the promotion of our main event, Wear Rare. For the description of the disorder, a Biochemistry student will help you understand the disease.

4. Show up during Wear Rare! One of the team members and the child will model their designed denim products together on the ramp. After the fashion show, the designed products will be auctioned and the funds raised will go to the kids. Invite your friends too!

Aside from being able to help the kids, teams who will volunteer will get freebies and gift certificates!!
