What is a Charcoal Briquette?
A compressed block of combustible material, primarily made from charcoal dust or other biomass materials, used as a fuel source. Unlike traditional lump charcoal, which consists of irregularly shaped pieces of charred wood, briquettes are uniform in size and shape, typically resembling small pillows, cylinders, or hexagonal logs.
Raw Materials: In the Philippines, these are often made from agro-forest wastes, including coconut shells, coconut husks, coffee bean hulls, sawdust, rice husks, cassava rhizomes, sugarcane bagasse, water hyacinth, and even peanut shells.
Environmental Benefits
Reduces Deforestation - Briquettes are made from biodegradable waste (e.g., sawdust, leaves, rice husks, coconut shells), reducing the need to cut trees for traditional charcoal.
Minimizes Waste - Transforms agricultural and household organic waste into useful fuel, lessening the volume of garbage and helping solve local waste management issues.
Efficient - less messy, easier to handle, ignite more easily, burn slowly, produce more intense heat per unit volume.
Lower Carbon Emissions - Briquettes burn more efficiently and cleanly than traditional charcoal, emitting less smoke and harmful gases.
Longer Burning Time - Briquettes burn more slowly and maintain heat longer than traditional charcoal, making them more efficient for cooking or heating.
Less Smoke, Less Health Risk - They produce less smoke and ash, improving indoor air quality and reducing respiratory issues for users, especially women and children.
Supports Local Circular Economy - Materials used are locally available waste, making production cost-effective and keeping value within the community.
Affordable Fuel Option - Briquettes are often cheaper than commercial charcoal or LPG, making them a cost-effective energy source for low-income households.
