Bataan Coastal Clean Up and Turtle Conservation: A Community-Driven Effort for Nature and Future Generations
Each year, passionate volunteers from across the Philippines — and particularly those connected with iVolunteer Philippines — come together to make a concrete difference for the environment through coastal clean ups and turtle conservation activities in Bataan. Organized by the Nature Awareness and Conservation Club Inc. (NACCI), these events strengthen community stewardship, raise environmental awareness, and actively protect vital marine habitats in one of the country’s most important coastal regions.
Coastal Clean Up: Taking Action on Pollution
The Bataan coastal clean up initiatives bring volunteers together on the shores of coastal communities — removing plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other debris that threaten both marine life and the health of the coastline. These activities are vital because marine pollution, especially plastics, not only harms sea turtles and other wildlife but also disrupts local fishing livelihoods and ecosystem balance
Turtle Conservation at the Heart of the Program
Sea turtles — locally known in many parts of the Philippines as pawikan — are internationally recognized as vulnerable species due to threats like habitat loss, poaching, and marine debris. In Bataan, coastal habitats serve as nesting grounds for various turtle species. Conservation activities during NACCI-led events include visiting protected nesting beaches, learning from local community stewards, and understanding hands-on conservation practices that support turtle survival.
Education and Empowerment Through Volunteerism
At the core of the Bataan events is an emphasis on environmental education and community engagement. Volunteers not only contribute physically through clean ups and conservation work but also absorb lessons about local ecology, sustainable practices, and community needs. This learning dimension builds long-lasting environmental awareness and inspires many participants to continue advocacy and action beyond the event itself.
