A short backgrounder

In Ang Galing, each learner learns at her/his own pace. The use of the marungko approach in teaching reading and writing in Filipino may help a beginner realize that with only the three letters "M", "S", "A", she/he can already learn several words and phrases, something which the traditional a-e-i-o-u, ba-be-bi-bo-bu does not do for non-readers. With "M", S","A", one can come up with the following words and their derivatives: ama, mas, masa, asam, mama (honorific for an old man), sa, am, sasama, masama, sama, asa, Sam, mama (term of endearment). One can also come up with these phrases: sasama sa mama, mas masama, aasa sa ama. As the learner progresses, more letters are added to the first three until the learner reaches the goal of learning "M","S","A","I","O","B". Ordinarily, once the learner has mastered the word and phrase lists for "M","S","A","I","O","B", she/he would be introduced to very short stories. We could have used the marungko approach all throughout but for the unique circumstance of our learners. Most of them are enrolled in schools and are learning to read and write there as well though possibly at a slower pace. They are also exposed to what we may consider as "difficult" words very early. They may hear it every day from their family, their community. We believe that words cannot be rated according to how adults define "difficult". Adults may consider words such as "asam", "asa", "masa" as difficult for children but these words are made up of the first three letters that a non-reader can learn.

We have come up with very short stories that are more attuned to the reality of the lives of our learners. However, we find that this is not enough. A story should be written considering these factors: their reality (the context of their lives), reading readiness (we find very few story books in Filipino with only a few lines, about three to ten sentences long that our beginning readers can read) and the third factor, what letters can already be read and written by our learners. The third is learner-specific. We are going to make use of what letters the learner already knows to teach her/him to read and write.

Once a learner has given us the letters that she/he can already read and write, we then make words from these letters. We are now undergoing compilation of words for specific learners. These words that are learner-specific will be the pool of words that a writer can tap to write stories for this particular learner.

Mechanics:
1 Each of the learners that we will compile words for will be identified by a code name. A learner's letters list will be published with the code name.
2 You can compile words for as many learners as you can provided that you indicate the code name for each compilation.
3 Each of the learners has a particular list of letters that she/he can read and write which may be different from another learner - the learner's letters list. Do not compile words that are not made up of letters that your chosen learner can read and write. It is okay to compile for a learner that has already been chosen. It is okay to compile with a group.
4 There are two ways to VOLUNTEER:
a) Volunteer as a compiler - post as a status on this page the code name of the learner that you choose to compile words for. Then start on your word list for this learner.
b) Volunteer as a consolidator - you will consolidate all the words that the compilers have come up with. Your task is to take out from the list all the words that have been double-compiled (when a volunteer has come up with a word that is also found in the list of another) and to check if a word (which you may not be sure to exist) exists in the Filipino vocabulary.
5 Deadline for submission: For the compilers- Two weeks from the time of posting of the learners' code name.
For the consolidators - One week from the time compilations for a particular learner are forwarded for consolidation.
6 Who can join? - EVERYONE
7 How many words should I compile? - from the letters list of the learner you have chosen, you can come up with as many words as you like
 
We are going to add more learner's letters list as we go along.
